Sample Toulmin Argument
Sample Toulmin ArgumentYou should have a basic understanding of MLA essay before you attempt to write your own. However, if you are not familiar with the MLA rulebook and why you should follow it, here is a sample toulmin argument. An argument can be said to be a proof that supports no one, but is used to help people understand another argument or point. An argument does not need to be complex, nor does it need to be lengthy. It can be as simple as a single paragraph or as long as a novel. As long as it makes sense and it is true to the MLA format. A few examples of an argument are:'The Texas media law prohibits the disclosure of information related to the criminal history of a person who has applied for or received a motor vehicle license. This prevents criminals from obtaining licenses that would allow them to obtain a motor vehicle, a handgun, and other dangerous weapons.' - Senator Wendy DavisEven though the initial sentence appears to be a statement, there is no supporting argume nt. To support this statement, you must cite evidence. To provide evidence for your statement, you should discuss what the senator is attempting to say and how she said it. If you do not feel comfortable discussing what your statements are in full, make sure to use ellipses, underline, bold, or some other format to separate your words. If you need to prove something to a person with the opposing side of the argument, then you will have to provide a more concise argument. A better argument would be to link a few supporting arguments together, but this will require you to keep your essay a little shorter. If you don't feel like writing lengthy arguments, just make sure to provide supporting evidence to every statement you make. The MLA standard requires that each paragraph contain a sentence which introduces the main point of the essay. Although this seems to be fairly easy to accomplish, it is actually harder than it appears. When writing an argument, make sure that you do not confuse the point of your statement with the main idea of your entire essay. When writing an argument, you must remember that you cannot just put all of your points on one page. Instead, you should divide your topic into several paragraphs so that each paragraph provides a more complete argument.Using the MLA format for your essay will help you stay organized and prevent you from having to constantly come up with information to add to your essay. You can read an example of an argument from the MLA website. After you complete this sample essay, you will be able to write a persuasive argument using MLA format.
